Social Housing Under the New Government

Confirmed speakers:

  • Representative, Regulation Directorate, Homes and Communities Agency
  • Paul Howarth, Senior Consultant, The Welfare Reform Club

Context:

One of the major policy announcements by the Conservative Party during the General Election campaign was the promise to introduce new Council Housing Deals to help local authorities to build more social housing. The Government's commitment to striking housing deals with local authorities was reaffirmed during the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government Sajid Javid’s LGA conference speech.

There are a number of other policy measures impacting social housing due to be implemented, including the extension of Right to Buy to assured tenants of Housing Associations, the Homelessness Reduction Act and the continued roll-out of Universal Credit.

The safety of social housing has also recently come under increased public scrutiny, with local authorities keen to reassure residents that their homes are safe and secure.

All of the above issues will have a significant effect on local authorities and other social housing providers. Join us on 12th October for a full briefing about the new Government’s plans and the future for social housing.

Key Issues to be Addressed Include:

  • Government policies & actions affecting social housing
  • The place of “social” in the future of housing delivery
  • Future Funding
  • Safety in Social Housing
  • Best practice in allocating social housing & managing waiting lists
  • Tackling underoccupancy in social housing
  • Using Discretionary Housing Payments to protect vulnerable people
  • Implementation of Universal Credit
  • Impact of the Homelessness Reduction Act
